Choosing the right type of internal door can significantly impact both the functionality and aesthetic of your home or commercial property. Whether you’re renovating or simply looking to refresh the look of your interior, understanding the various types of internal doors available is essential and can make a big difference to a room. Each type of door offers different advantages and can cater to different needs, from maximising space to enhancing privacy.

Internal doors come in various shapes and sizes. Here are some common types of internal doors:

Panel doors

Panel doors are one of the most popular choices in the UK. They consist of a frame with panels (typically made of wood or MDF) and come in various designs such as two-panel, four-panel, or six-panel configurations. These doors offer a classic and versatile look that can be painted or stained to match your interior.

Flush doors

Offering a smooth, flat surface, flush doors are designed with no detailing or panels, providing a sleek and modern appearance. They are typically made of plywood or MDF with a hollow or solid core and are ideal for minimalist interiors or someone looking for a door solution with minimum maintenance.

French doors

French doors feature multiple glass panels extending most of their length, often used in pairs. They are perfect for connecting rooms or providing access to patios or gardens, allowing natural light to flow between spaces while maintaining separation. These classic yet modern doors provide a space with a light, airy feel and are perfect for ventilation and easy access throughout a space.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors operate on a track, sliding horizontally to open and close. They are an excellent choice for areas with limited space and are also commonly used for wardrobes, bathrooms, and contemporary living spaces.

Bifold doors

Designed with two or more panels that fold back on themselves, bifold doors are often used for closets, utility rooms, or as dividers between rooms as they are practical, easy to use and provide optimal accessibility.

Barn doors

Barn doors are sliding doors mounted on a track above the door frame, offering a rustic or industrial look. They add character to a room and serve as both a functional door and a design feature.

Dutch doors

Divided horizontally, dutch doors allow the top half to open while the bottom half remains closed. These doors are aesthetically pleasing and functional, often used in kitchens or nurseries to provide partial access and visibility.

Glass doors

Glass doors are made entirely or partially of glass, providing visibility and light transfer between rooms. These doors can be crafted with a range of different window glass types including frosted, clear, or decorative, making them suitable for modern and contemporary interiors. Glass doors can also be ideal for commercial places such as offices as the glass type can provide privacy and restricted view.

Fire doors

Fire doors are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke, providing critical protection. They are typically required by building regulations in certain areas of a home, such as between a garage and living space but in almost all business buildings and commercial spaces.
