Window Installation Guide

Charlie

Charlie

The average windows will last for decades before they need to be replaced, especially if you have aluminium windows which are some of the best performing windows on the market.

However, due to their long lifespan, it may be the case that you haven’t personally experienced the window installation process first-hand, either with your residential or commercial property.

In today’s post, we will give you an overview of what installing windows involves, so you know what to expect. We also have a window buyers guide in case you are considering updating your frames.

Window Material Type

  • Aluminium
  • uPVC
  • Wood

Windows can be made from a variety of materials, namely aluminium, uPVC and wood. We’ve discussed the hotly debated aluminium vs uPVC windows in a previous post. So why does the material for window frames matter so much?

First and foremost, the frame is what holds the window glass in place. It needs to be structurally sound so that the glass can continue to provide a strong defence against the elements for years to come.

As with any material, window frames will differ greatly in lifespan depending on the option you go for. Aluminium windows can last up to 45 years on average.

The frame type will also affect the energy efficiency of the window, as well as the colour options that are available.

Window Glass Type

  • Laminated glass
  • Float glass
  • Toughened glass
  • Obscured glass

The location of your windows will determine which window glass type is most suitable. Considerations will include whether human impact is likely, energy efficiency as well as privacy concerns.

Depending on the type of window frame you opt for, you’ll also be given options for the glass type including any applicable tinting or patterns.

Measuring Up

Windows are custom made to each property, including the individual window space that they are designed to fit into. This is to ensure the performance of the window is not compromised, in addition to providing the best aesthetic finish.

Your window installer will measure each window from the inside and outside of the building. They’ll also make a note of any window openings to go on the new windows, especially if these differ from the current design.

Production

Once your window installer has all the information they need, your windows will be produced usually off-site at a specialist facility. The chosen material will determine how many stages are involved in the production.

Before being signed off, the windows will need to meet strict standards relating to safety and efficiency. All of which will ensure a smooth smoother installation and ultimately, better customer satisfaction.

Window Installation

Unless working on a new build property, the old windows will be removed and disposed of. The new windows will then be installed room by room.

The work will span both the inside and outside of the property, as rendering may need to be removed and the windows will need to be sealed thoroughly around the edges. Expanding foam and sealant may be used, especially during the installation of uPVC windows.

The final stage is to ensure all of the windows are in good working order, including any opening or lock mechanisms if applicable.

Top Tips

While your window installers will always endeavour to keep things neat and tidy, the reality of replacing such a large structure in your wall is that mess is inevitable. That’s why, it’s always a wise idea to have your windows installed before decorating, laying carpets etc. Even though floor coverings will be placed down, it’s still better to get the messy jobs over with first!

Also, we may be biased as leading installers of aluminium windows, but take the time to choose your window installer carefully, regardless of which frame and glass type you opt for. Rather than get lured in by ‘you buy one, you get one free!’ TV adverts, it’s imperative the installers are trusted and FENSA regulated.

If you live in a heritage area, or if you’re unsure which type of window would best suit your property/current pain points, take the time to do your research. Windows are an investment purchase that will add value to your home, but it still pays to get things right the first time.
